Bharti Airtel, one of the leading telecom operators in India has announced today that it will offer free access to Facebook’s mobile site – m.facebook.com.

Facebook is a popular social networking service that gives people the power to share and make the world more open & connected

The partnership allows Airtel with its 130 million plus customer base to allow free access to the mobile version of Facebook for a period of two months until August 31st, 2010. Airtel customers who are Facebook users will be able to post status updates, comment and write on walls, message others, and also be able to view or upload photos – all without any data charges.

Steps to be followed to gain free access :

1. Sms ‘FACEBOOK’ to 54321 to activate
2. Visit m.facebook.com to access facebook (free of data charges)

Facebook’s mobile site will be initially available in English and Hindi, with five other languages – Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam – soon to follow by July 15, 2010.

Guest account is one of the default accounts created when Windows 7 is installed. It is disabled by default but still it can be a major security hole as it can be enabled by a malware or a virus. To help secure the guest account you may need to rename and password protect it.

Renaming a Guest account :

It can be done with the help of Local Security Policy editor which is available only for Windows Business and Ultimate editions.

1. Click Start button, type ‘secpol.msc’ in the search box and then press ‘Enter’.

2.  After the Local Security Policy editor has loaded, expand Local Policies and then select Security Options.

3. Double click Accounts:Rename guest account and enter a new name and click ok.

Password protect a Guest account :

1. Click Start Menu , right click Computer and click Manage
2. After Computer Management window opens, expand Local Users and Group and select the Users folder
3. Right Click the Guest account on the list and select Set Password

4. A warning screen will appear telling you about what may happen if you proceed. Disregard this message and click Proceed

5. In the Set Password Window, type in a hard to guess password and avoid using dictionary words

6. Click Ok to set the new password

Alternate Service :

This type of service is very hard to find and I was able to identify one more similar service @ http://login2.me. Though its interface needs a little tweaking.

Both Gmail and Yahoo Mail uses an effective spam filtering algorithm but these algorithms are not fail proof and they may mark a legitimate message as spam (false positive) and you won’t know about it unless you open spam folder in web mail.So when you use a POP3 client such as Outlook or Thunderbird to download your emails ,suspected spam messages will never reach your inbox or spam folder of your email client.

The only way to prevent this from occurring is to disable spam filters in Gmail and Yahoo mail and to use anti spam component of your security suite.

How to disable spam filter in Gmail :

• Sign-in to your GMail Account.
• Click “Create a filter” under Show search options.

• In the Has the words textbox enter : label:spam (you can also try is:spam and in:spam)

• Click Next Step.
• Accept the warning.

• Mark the checkbox “Never send it to Spam”

• Click Create a Filter

Now Gmail won’t filter your spam messages to its folder.

How to disable spam filter in Yahoo mail :

By default, you cannot access your Yahoo! Mail using POP3 unless you purchase the Yahoo! Mail Plus plan. But you can use YPOPs (YPOPs! is a free open source software that provides POP3 and SMTP access to Yahoo! Mail.)

• Sign-in to your Yahoo Mail account.
• Click “More options” in options drop down menu.

• Uncheck “Automatically send spam to my spam folder”

Now you need not worry about false positive e-mails.

Seeders ,Leechers and Trackers :

• Seed : The file uploaded by the first user is known as seed.The file has .torrent extension and it contains information regarding the torrent such as its size, source, hash, trackers etc.
• Peer : A peer doesn’t contain the complete file but has parts of it and it acts as a source (seed) to others while downloading the remaining parts from source.
• Seeder : Once a peer downloads the torrent data completely it gets converted into a seed.It has the complete copy of the torrent and offers it for upload.The torrent speed can increase dramatically with increase in the number of seeds/seeders.
• Leecher : A leecher is one who has no percent of the torrent data and attempting to download it.
• Tracker : A tracker is a server that is responsible for tracking the seeds and peers and statistics associated with the torrent file.

Privacy, Security and Legality :

• BitTorrent lacks anonymity. Anyone can obtain the IP address of participants in a swarm from the tracker.This IP address can be used for attacks or expose to the risk of being sued for illegal downloads.
• Since the shared files will be downloaded directly from the seeder, there is high risk of virus infection.So it is advisable to read the comments before downloading a file.Generally torrent downloaders use hash to verify that download is not altered from when the torrent was originally created, but if the source files were already infected then there is no protection !
• The main problem with files shared using BitTorrent is its legality.Most of the torrents share copy protected content.

Speed and Reliability:

• The speed of a torrent is comparatively slower than a HTTP download, but when the number of seeders are high you can get good download speeds.
• Like speed, the reliability also depends on the seeders.A torrent must have atleast one seeder else the file is not available for download.As per torrent guidelines a user must maintain 1:1 share ratio for maintaining good health of a torrent. i.e., if he downloads 1 MB he should upload 1 MB.
