Earlier we’d a blog post reviewing top 5 download managers. Internet Download Manager (IDM) was our pick in that review. Today, we’ll review it elaborately. A download manager / accelerator such as IDM helps you to manage / accelerate your downloads using various techniques such as dynamic file splitting and downloading, file resume etc .

Internet Download Manager :

IDM by Tonec Inc is a power-packed download manager / accelerator that has a user-friendly interface and is bloatware-free. It can also increase download speeds by splitting a file into many segments which are then moved in parallel. It seamlessly integrates into popular browsers such as Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari etc. IDM also supports multiple protocols such as HTTP, HTTPS, MMS, FTP and plain RTMP .

Notable Features :

Here , we’ll list the features that are not common among other download accelerators / managers .

 Site Grabber

 Dynamic File Segmentation

 Scheduler / Queues

 Speed Limiter

 Streaming Media Grabber

 Refresh Expired Links

 Categorized Downloads

 File-Sharing Site Compatibility

Site Grabber :

This is a very useful feature of IDM which helps you to dig into the links found in a site and download the files with the extension of your choice. You are also provided with the option to save the custom grabber project as a template for future use. To know more about this click here .

Dynamic Segmentation :

IDM claim to use in-half division rule to download files. You can find more info about this feature here. You can set the no. of split connections that can be made in settings. If your are downloading more than three files at once with 16 split connections (max) per file download then there is a significant performance degradation.

Scheduler / Queues :

IDM has a powerful scheduler as well as a queue manager. You can queue all files and schedule it for download then IDM will download the files one by one as per the queue at the scheduled time. You can also specify the action to be performed after the queue such as shut down etc. More info : here

Speed Limiter :

IDM is very effective in downloading files at maximum speed available . So you may face a problem where your site surfing is affected. In this case, this handy feature , will help you to limit speeds at particular level.

Streaming Media Grabber :

One of the famous functionality that comes with IDM is its media grabber tool. This tool integrates into popular browsers and will help you to save the streaming FLV media files such as Youtube etc.Whenever a media is being streamed you can see a ‘Download this video’ button at the top right corner. You shall use it to download those videos.

Refresh Expired Links :

One of the unique features found in IDM is its refresh expired links feature. When you download a file from certain sites they create a session for file downloads. If your internet connectivity is problematic then this feature will request you to refresh the link address if you try to download the same file from the start since the file won’t be available in the old link.

Categorized Downloads :

IDM automatically categorizes the downloads based on the file extension and each download can be saved in different locations.

File Sharing Site Compatibility :

IDM can be used to download from major file sharing sites. If you’re a premium user in one of the sites then you can save the login info in IDM and download them with ease.

Feature that we’d like to see in IDM :

IDM lacks certain features such as Mirror Search, Tray download status tooltip. Also we’d like to see some improvements in the UI since it is not that attractive.

The Bottom-Line :

IDM though not freeware is worth the cost ($29) . We’d reviewed a lot of download managers in our earlier post and we found it to be best among the competition.

Click here to try IDM for free (30 days).

Lately, two acronyms SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) have made headlines due to the Internet Blackout demonstrated by Wikipedia and many other leading organizations.

Objective :

Both have been proposed in the US with the objective of preventing illegal file-sharing activities such as software and movie piracy . The bill if passed would give the US Department of Justice , the power to go after any foreign website that facilitate piracy intentionally (?) .

The possible consequences would included ,

Domain Seizure such as Torrent-Finder.

Deny access to Payment processors such as Visa, Mastercard – Wikileaks.

Possible arrest of the site owners – Megaupload.com.

SOPA and PIPA , the other side :

While Wikipedia and other organizations (including us) DONOT condone piracy since a movie production involves the hard work of thousands. Our main fear is that it can have severe consequences on the very underpinnings of a free and open society . The Freedom of Speech and the Freedom of Press may be killed by the government which may block sites that criticise their functioning in the context of protecting the sovereignty of the nation and religious beliefs (as they do here in India to coverup censorship) .

Possible Solution :

The recent Megaupload.com seizure made it clear that US doesn’t need those two legislation to act against foreign websites .

The users who had their legitimate files hosted were left wondered about the crime they’ve committed . Also there are many legislation such as DMCA ( Digital Millennium Copyright Act ) which can be improved / strengthened to protect copyrighted material.

Latest Update :

We found that SOPA and PIPA legislation have been delayed but still they’re not dead yet. So if you’re a US citizen who feel that Internet Freedom should be protected then click here to sign a petition . We definitely know that Free & Freedom aren’t the same but we feel that SOPA / PIPA is not the answer.

Here, free version is suited if you require to perform basic maintenance activities and PRO version is recommended if you want more powerful features but with an additional fee.

Features :

The software tools are classified under four different categories ,

Clean

Optimize

Repair

Security

Control

Clean : Under this you have various utilities that remove the unwanted junk files and registry entries. One powerful utility found here is the file shredder that deletes a file permanently by overwriting it .

Optimize : The tools found here will help you to increase your system performance by defragging, optimizing your browser in terms of concurrent connections etc. based on your bandwidth . You can also recycle unused memory.

Repair : This sections covers all tools needed to remove old / invalid shortcuts and for checking file system errors.

Security : These tools include privacy cleaner, ,malware blocker , hotpatch downloader etc.

Control : The utilities filed here will help you to identify duplicate files, know your system information etc.

Turbo Boost :

The Turbo Boost utility is an interesting feature that will help you to boost your system as per your usage profile. You can choose between two modes, Work and Game. Based on your selection, it will terminate unnecessary services.

But make sure that you know what you are doing, because when we selected ‘Game mode’ , the application recommended disabling Windows Update which we DON’T recommend because some may choose the option to have the boost to be turned on at Windows startup . Though it uses background bandwidth, it is a necessary service to keep your system updated and malware-free .

Active Boost :

This setting when turned ON will take care of your system automatically during idle hours by removing and fixing various errors. You can also manually invoke the maintenance process by either choosing,

Quick Care

Deep Care

UI & System Requirements :

The UI is easy to use and has various skins to choose . In terms of requirements it support all Windows versions right from XP till Windows 8 (!?) .The malware remover included with the suite can only compliment your existing antivirus software hence don’t run it standalone .

Our take :

The program uses cloud-based database for various updates which is very good. Also it is well-balanced in terms of features and pricing when compared to its competitors. You can buy the PRO version for as low as $13 using this link (promo) but before doing so try their free version and find whether it suits your needs.

The year end is not too far away and various security software vendors have started releasing their next generation antivirus/internet security suites to customers. The newer versions of internet security suites from prominent vendors such as Norton, F-Secure, Kaspersky, Panda, Trend Micro, Webroot have been released recently. The new software products focused mainly on three things.

Cloud protection.

Reduction in foot-print.

Set & forget security.

Cloud Protection :

Cloud Protection here refers to the cloud-based security (a.k.a Security-as-a-Service). This type of protection has various advantages ,

Minimal resource consumption since most processing is done in network.

Up-to-date protection against newer threats.

Easy-to-use and manage.

Reduction in foot print :

Today we find applications that are resource intensive and are critical for completion of our job. So people started looking for security solutions that provided maximum security with minimal resource usage and the vendors too have realized it very well. Now we have slick new products that consumes very less resource.

Set & Forget Security :

Users now-a-days expect security products to be a silent performer . Hence , they don’t want the nagging prompts which require users to allow/disallow each program. People tend to allow all requests and this made a major loophole in security. So vendors have started developing something called auto-detect engine which will decide automatically for well-known / commonly used programs.

These are the three main improvements that are found in the latest products.

Webroot Internet Security :

Recently, we came across latest products (entirely new stuff!) from WebRoot Software Inc. Webroot has been doing good for the past few years scoring high in various third party lab tests. So we decided to review it here and give you an overview of it.

Before we start …. we would like to stress that the following review is not entirely based on detection rates, we’ve taken into account various performance scores, additional benchmarks released by third parties in addition to our own testing.

Overview :

Webroot has acquired Prevx, a well-known cloud-based anti malware company recently and its latest products incorporates Prevx technologies. So the product lines was revamped entirely. There are three product categories to choose for your PC security.

SecureAnywhere Complete

SecureAnywhere Essentials

SecureAnywhere Antivirus.

You can view a comparison here – http://www.webroot.com/En_US/consumer-compare.html

Here we’ll be reviewing , SecureAnywhere Complete which has complete set of features.

Lightning-fast Setup / Installation :

Believe it or not the setup file for product was 591 KB did we say KB yes ! . If you compare it to other products such as Bitdefender, Norton etc you’ll be surprised. Then we started the installation process.

First step is to enter a key code then click Next .

A quick scan is run before installation and Voila ! you’ve the new software in your pc.

So installation was a breeze …and the footprint was almost not noticeable.

[-] It marked a Nokia Ovi Suite codec for removal. We hope it was a false-positive and we added it to the whitelist and proceeded further.

Pleasant Interface :

Next we opened the user interface and was very pleasing to our eyes. Yes , the colors blend beautifully. STOP ! isn’t the main purpose of this software is to protect your pc . Well, it is not bad to have a good looking UI. The menus are arranged in the left corner. Clicking on those provided additional options and we have tabs which further segregated the UI. Here we have an additional information for you.

The backup component is licensed from SugarSync (download separately).

The password management is licensed from well-known Lastpass.

This version includes 10 GB/user free space .

Key features / tools :

Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete has many notable features. Some of them are listed below,

Cloud protection when online.

Predictive protection for offline computers.

Phishing protection.

System cleanup tools.

Safe Sandbox.

System control tools.

Identity Shield / Management etc.

The System clean-up tools though not as robust as the free CCleaner was decent and recognized common programs and allows you to delete data securely but we cannot preview what is marked for deletion .

[-] One shortcoming here is the missing registry cleaner, we hope Webroot would soon have this feature incorporated. Also the clean log opened in a notepad but we feel it should blend into the UI.

Webroot has a very powerful system process tool that can be used to kill various system process. We caution you to use it carefully !!. Webroot does include a firewall that uses Windows in-built firewall and enhances it like Trend Micro Security. Don’t worry the Windows 7 firewall is very powerful and with Webroot’s additional configuration it should be working good.

Decent Antivirus Protection :

As we know Webroot uses cloud based detection, we were initially doubtful in its effectiveness because it didn’t use traditional virus database and hence when you are out-of -internet access you are virtually out-of-protection. But we were proved wrong.

Webroot uses heuristic analysis and detects threats . Even if it is unclassified, it uses cloud-based file verification when you connect to the internet. Since vast majority of malware comes from the internet it is not a problem but users without internet connectivity should think twice !!. This product is entirely based on new technologies so for antivirus protection effectiveness you should wait and watch for results from various test labs though initial reports were positive.

Simple Settings :

You need not be an advanced user to understand the various settings of Webroot. Unlike other suites Webroot requires you to answer simple questions by the way of marking / unmarking the checkbox . Some notable settings are,

Hide in Add/Remove Programs.

Captcha when changing settings.

Heuristics settings for different profiles.

Multi-Device Protection :

A single Webroot protection allows installing the suite on up to three PCs, your subscription also lets you install and manage Webroot Mobile Security for Android on up to three Android devices. Subscription can be managed via the online console. Except SecureAnywhere Antivirus all other products can be purchased with a minimum of three user license.

Online Console :

The online console allows you to view & manage all licensed computers and includes scan logs and Webroot plans to incorporate various other features very soon.

Pros :

Low System Impact.

Powerful Password Management.

Friendly GUI.

Decent Malware Detection & Cleanup.

Safe Sandbox

Works Together / Compatible with Other AV

System Tools for Process Control , Cleaning Junk etc.

Cons :

No Spam Protection

Limited Offline Protection.

Too New to Rate its Effectiveness.

Missing Detailed Logs.

Single Licensing not available for Complete/Essentials

Conclusion :

Webroot has redefined the term ‘Internet Security’ by developing a software solution that is low on resources and good in protection . So we invite you to try a 30-day trial of Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete and post your feedback here.

There is a common misconception among Internet users that getting an unlimited plan will entitle them to unlimited downloads. But this is not true for all cases, Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) have started to limit the internet bandwidth speed for users who exceed the limit set by them.In rare cases they have also terminated the connection.

Net Neutrality ….

Before we get into it, we may hear this term often relating to unfair limits imposed by ISP’s. So let us hear from both ends,

Customer : Believes that the ISP has unleashed this limit on unsuspecting customer who has subscribed to an unlimited plan without any clear information stating about this policy.

ISP :Believes that to provide QoS (Quality of Service), the customer should maintain Quality of Usage (QoU).

In India, we have a fancy term ‘Fair Usage Policy’ which denotes the ‘fair usage’ and the repercussion of using unfairly.

Airtel , one of the India’s leading service provider has defined it as follows,

A very small number of customers use an excessive amount of the network bandwidth, to the
extent that it can impair the experience of others. The intent of Airtel’s Fair Usage Policy is to
provide the optimum internet experience to all customers.

What Next ?

I won’t be commenting whether this policy is required or not but I would love to introduce a software to you which helps to keep track of your usage limits, speed ..

DU Meter :

DU Meter by Hagel Technologies, provides an accurate account of the data flowing through the computer’s network connection.DU Meter also includes an extensive reporting facility, a flexible notifications and events system, and more.

So why should you use it ?

Track your online data transfer rates.

Set usage limits.

Track unexpected / dangerous network activity.

Get email reports reg. your child’s data usage.

Monitor only Internet / LAN / both traffic.

Set data transfer rates.

Set custom alerts.

Full support for 64-bit Windows – including Sidebar and Windows taskbar integration.

Stop watch.

Online forms are simple to implement, but potentially difficult to completely secure. A typical web form allows an internet user to enter information into your system, which is then transmitted, usually at their direction, to your servers for processing. At this point, information is then either returned to the user, or managed internally, depending on the type of application your site has been built to support. The versatility of this type of system makes for an extremely wide range of potential security vulnerabilities. Even on multiple domain web hosting environment, it is entirely possible that your sites information and access could be compromised via a form that has not been edge tested to every degree possible.

In order to secure an online form, it is first important to consider that most testing regiments that are available are not exhaustive, hijacking of a site via manipulation of a specific vulnerability. A security weakness in a susceptibility of the identified software can bring an entire network down, and the more complex your system is, the more likely it is that there are holes in your security.

XSS attacks have become 37% more common in recent years, with information maintained and acquired via a JavaScript fragment exploit most frequently.

While you probably cannot completely guarantee the security of a website, it is possible to use a single content redisplay to stabilize your system and maximize your ability to confidently display and collect user data without worrying that it might be redisplayed or corrupted.

Non persistent data provided by a web client can often have a flat document structure combining potentially serious malicious input into hidden frames. These problems are magnified by the significance of individually targeted code, especially code that has been designed from the start to successfully self propagate between clients, effectively encompassing the full range of gradual application exploits. In order to combat these tactics, it is necessary to maintain a persistent architecture revolving, ideally, around a secure website host. This allows users to access server side JavaScript in stages populated with URL extraction, which escapes many security loopholes entirely.

These techniques only cover a few of the possible validation issues that can occur in an insufficiently policy driven engine. In particular, if your service allows users to insert their own html markup into a web form, it is significantly more difficult to ensure that it does not contain any malicious code. There are services that can run such code through a process and check their contents for security issues, but it is also possible to do it through scripting a validation feature of html itself. A properly secured cookie will be effective in most situations, as long as the attack does not come from an IP address unavailable to the client side situation flags. This creates a unique situation in which a disabled script may become active without your direction, so in general it is a good idea to set your site specific preferences to disable these kinds of templates.

What is Wi-Fi Tethering ?

Wi-Fi Tethering is a new term that denotes the sharing of mobile 2G/3G connection with external devices such as laptops over Wi-Fi . In short, it allows sharing of the internet connection of an Internet-capable mobile phone . Many carriers impose an additional fee for tethering mobile internet connection .

Wi-Fi Tethering in Symbian Phone :

While many have switched / planning to switch to Android and other mobile OS due to the recent decision by Nokia to discontinue Symbian development and support Windows platform, still I love Symbian for its simplicity and ease of use.Although Symbian platform has a very less number of applications compared to Android and iOS market , it has some useful software that perform its task very efficiently . JoikuSpot is one such software that facilitates mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and enables internet connection sharing .

JoikuSpot – An Overview :

JoikuSpot is an Wi-Fi tethering software for mobiles that run on Symbian S60 and ^3 . It is observed that Wi-Fi tethering offers greater advantages compared to bluetooth or cable option because it offers greater stability and hassle-free sharing of an internet connection.

An user can also save money because he/she need not buy a seperate USB dongle . Since an user always carries his mobile phone it offers greater flexibility. JoikuSpot has introduced two versions,

JoikuSpot Light

JoikuSpot Premium

The former version is a free version for compatible Nokia mobile phones and the latter is recommended for users who require additional features for a small fee such as ,

Custom Hotspot naming

Wi-Fi Access security

Full Internet & E-mail Protocol support

And more. Visit http://www.joiku.com/products to know more.

Conclusion :

We believe Symbian platform has an application that does it job excellently while even Android and other mobile OS seem to have missing this capability without additional steps such as rooting or has only ‘Premium only’ versions . So atlast all Symbian lovers have something to boast about !

Problem with inbuilt utility :

While Windows OS includes an integrated uninstall utility ‘Add/Remove programs’, sometimes it may fail to remove some programs related to security such as Norton completely since they root into the system. Also it is not very good in dealing with registry leftovers. The main cause for this issue is Windows uninstaller just uses the programs inbuilt uninstaller . While it may not be a problem initially , you may face some compatibility issues with your new security software or the system becomes bloatware in the long run. It certainly degrades your system performance due to the junk it has left during uninstallation. So what would you do ? Simple ! use a dedicated software uninstall utility such as Revo Uninstaller.

About the software :

Revo Uninstaller is a powerful alternative to Windows uninstaller. It helps you to uninstall applications that fail with the Windows ‘Add/Remove programs ‘ control panel applet. It analyses the application data and removes the program leftovers which helps to prevent upgrade problems and increase the system performance.

Features :

Uninstaller – It does three tasks, 1. Creates a restore point, 2. Uses program inbuilt uninstaller , 3. Scans for left overs and removes them.

Auto-run Manager – Manage your Windows start-up programs here.

Junk Files Cleaner – Cleans temporary & unnecessary files created by applications and gain some disk space.

Browser Cleaner – Cleans history files, cookies etc from supported browsers.

Microsoft Office Cleaner – Cleans recent documents list for supported Office applications.

Windows Cleaner – Cleans Windows related history and temporary files.

Windows Tools – Provides one click access to commonly used Windows system tools.

Program Flavors :

Revo Uninstaller has two program versions, Free and Pro. The free version can satisfy most users, but if you need additional features go for the pro version. The feature comparison is provided here – Visit . The Pro version costs $40 per user license but we feel that the developers should reduce the license price a little. For users who can’t purchase a license here is a good news , the free version has most of the features that you require.

Program Interface :

The main window is divided into few movable and flexible interface components. The tools that we have mentioned before are located in the left side under the ‘main’ toolbar.Another great feature in the UI is the description it provides when you click each tool, it comes in handy for novice users and you may not require to view their help content at all.

Program Usage :

Note : The usage description is in reference to Revo Uninstaller PRO.

Using Real-time monitor :

Revo Uninstaller adds itself into Windows context menu after installation, so when you install a software right click the setup and select ‘Install with Revo Uninstaller’ option. The changes that the program makes during installation will be tracked and used during uninstallation for removing leftovers.

Using Forced Uninstall option :

It helps you to uninstall programs whose entries are not found in the Windows ‘add/remove programs’ list.Forced uninstaller will search for built in uninstaller it will be listed so that you can choose it to run or not.

Hunter Mode :

Drag & Drop the icon to any application shortcut and uninstall it.It helps in case you couldn’t locate the uninstaller for that particular application.

Links :

Download the free version : click here

Conclusion :

While free version is sufficient for most users since it does it task excellently , few may require the highly priced pro version which comes with few additional features.

When you perform a Windows upgrade or install a new OS in a secondary partition, you may not be able to access certain files and results in “Access Denied” error. Fortunately , Windows has a useful tool ‘icacls’ to solve this issue. This tool allows you to reset Access Control Lists (ACL’s).

To reset your permission issue perform the following steps,

Click Start Orb.

Type ‘cmd’ in search input box.

Right click ‘cmd’ in the result under Programs and select ‘Run as administrator’.

Now to go to the drive / folder whose permission needs a reset , type Drive letter: and click enter. For example : D:

Then type icacls * /T /Q /C /RESET ,now the drive / folder permission will be reset.

If it fails then try to take ownership of the folder/drive in question before using it.

For taking ownership.
